Wanneer huisdieren het einde van hun leven ingaan, zijn de eigenaren-verzorgers sterk afhankelijk van de empathische behandeling en het advies dat het beste kan worden gegeven door dierenartsen en hun teamleden. Dit advies is met name belangrijk om de bezorgdheid over de behandeling van het lichaam van hun huisdier na diens overlijden te verlichten.<\/p><p>Zeker, dierenartsen beschikken over aanzienlijke kennis en ervaring met begrafenis en vlamcrematie. Maar omdat alkalische hydrolyse (AH) pas recent commercieel verkrijgbaar is voor huisdieren, is dit alternatief voor crematie mogelijk onbekend bij huisdiereigenaren. Dit artikel is bedoeld om leden van het dierenartsenteam voldoende achtergrondinformatie te geven om het AH-alternatief vol vertrouwen te bespreken met rouwende cli\u00ebnten.<\/p><h4>Wat is het?<\/h4><p>Aquamation is een van de merknamen voor het wetenschappelijke proces dat bekend staat als alkalische hydrolyse. Toegepast op de behandeling van huisdieren, is AH ofwel de versnelde natuurlijke ontbinding van het lichaam door een combinatie van zachte waterstroming, temperatuur en alkaliteit.<\/p><p>Het proces reduceert het lichaam tot de basale bouwstenen (aminozuren, kleine peptiden, suikers en zouten) opgelost in water. De enige overgebleven vaste stof is de minerale as van de botten. Het AH-proces bootst weefselafbraak na, wat van nature gebeurt wanneer lichamen in de aarde worden begraven en worden blootgesteld aan de effecten van insecten en bodembacteri\u00ebn. Naast de behandeling van dierenresten heeft AH nog andere mogelijke toepassingen, zoals de verwijdering van weefsel uit onderzoeks- en diagnostische laboratoria en voor de behandeling van besmette karkassen van grote dieren of gevogelte wanneer zeer besmettelijke ziekteverwekkers worden vermoed of bevestigd.<\/p><h4>Geschiedenis<\/h4><p>Het eerste Amerikaanse patent voor het AH-proces werd verleend in 1888, maar het patent voor de eerste commerci\u00eble \u201ctissue digesters\u201d werd pas in 1994 verleend. De eerste units werden ge\u00efnstalleerd in medische hogescholen en onderzoeksinstellingen, waaronder veterinaire diagnostische laboratoria. Omdat het AH-proces alle infectiviteit van virale en bacteri\u00eble entiteiten binnen weefsel vernietigt, werden digester units snel ge\u00efnstalleerd en gebruikt in diverse onderzoeks- en medische centra in de Verenigde Staten, Japan, Schotland, Ierland, Europa en Canada. In 2003 waren er wereldwijd in totaal 29 van dergelijke units ge\u00efnstalleerd en volledig operationeel. In 2006 waren er alleen al in de Verenigde Staten meer dan 60 digesters ge\u00efnstalleerd in diverse veterinaire diagnostische laboratoria, aldus Joseph Wilson, CEO van Bio-Response Solutions.<\/p><p>In 2005 installeerde de Mayo Clinic het eerste single-body, humane AH-systeem dat commercieel in gebruik werd genomen. In 2008 werd de eerste unit voor huisdier-einde-van-het-leven doeleinden ge\u00efnstalleerd bij een dierencrematorium in Ohio.<\/p><p>Als gevolg van het succes van de Mayo Clinic-operatie begonnen individuen binnen de begrafenisindustrie op te merken, en in 2010 installeerde een uitvaartondernemer in Columbus, Ohio, de eerste AH commerci\u00eble unit voor begrafenisdoeleinden. Momenteel is het AH-proces voor begrafenisverspreiding goedgekeurd voor de behandeling van menselijke resten na het leven in 15 staten en 3 Canadese provincies. AH wordt ook onderworpen aan een regelgevende beoordeling door de ministeries van volksgezondheid in andere staten.
